FORMER NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH AND MERCK SCIENTIST JOINS THE COMPANY IMMEDIATELY
ITHACA, NY, March 26, 1997-Paracelsian Inc. (NASDAQ: PRLN) announced that Alfred Alberts has been engaged as a consultant by the Company effective today. Mr. Alberts's experience includes Vice President, Biochemistry and Natural Products Discovery at Merck & Co. Inc., where he was involved in the discovery of natural product leads for a broad range of human and animal related targets. Mr. Alberts' experience in Natural Products Discovery will enable him to provide guidance to the Company as it proceeds with the approaches initiated by Dr. John Babish.
Mr. Alberts has had a distinguished career having worked in the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Biological Chemistry at Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, and subsequently from 1975 to 1995 at Merck & Co. Inc, where he also directed programs in atherosclerosis, diabetes and obesity. He was responsible for the discovery and development of lovastatin (Mevacor) and simvastatin (Zocor).
Keith Rhodes, Chairman of the Board of Paracelsian, Inc., said, "Paracelsian is honored that such a distinguished scientist as Mr. Alberts is willing to contribute to the Company's ongoing scientific effort. His experience in discovering and developing two world leading drugs will be invaluable to the Company, and his expertise in Natural Products Discovery should further strengthen the Company's existing programs."
Mr. Alberts is a member of the boards of directors of Inflazyme Pharmaceuticals Ltd., and of Tripos, Inc., and also has served as a consultant to many pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.
Paracelsian is a biotechnology company engaged in the discovery of useful products from herbal sources. Its discoveries are accomplished by applying the Company's proprietary screening technology, based in signal transduction, to its library of extracts used in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
