This in on GPRS:

"I'm living in Zurich, Switzerland and I'm doing a PHD in computer science. I was involved with first field trials with GPRS in Zurich, we found that GPRS will not achieve the promised bandwith of 115 Kbps, realistic is about 42 Kbps and it will cost equivalent to 25 cents per minute. That means an hour sets you 15 $ back. I don't see GPRS as a real competition to Metricom's MCDN.
After this UMTS auction desaster I see UMTS set back for an other year, for a possible late 2003 launch in Switzerland.
Switzerland and whole Europe would be wide open for Metricom. There are more then 500 Million People living in Europe. An intro of a few big cities like London, Paris, Rome, Berlin, Munich and Zurich in Phase III of the Ricochet launch would be the next "right" step for Metricom.
Does anybody know something more about Metricom and a possible "light up" in Europe and Asia ?

Miro

P.S. Since a few month long on Metricom, but I will not sell for the next 2 years."
