New Delhi, May 19 (Bloomberg) -- Six Indian companies including Cipla Ltd., one of the country's leading drug makers, and Orchid Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals Ltd. are vying to introduce products of the same molecule as Viagra, a drug in the U.S. which cures impotence in males, the Business Standard daily said, citing executives of Cipla. Both Cipla and Orchid have sought the Food and Drug Administration's approvals for their new products. Indian companies are rushing to introduce the drugs in the home market before Pfizer Inc. obtains the product patent to sell in the country, the paper said.
Viagra, unveiled in the U.S. by Pfizer Inc., a New York- based pharmaceutical company, became that country's best-selling drug since its introduction last month. (Business Standard, 05/19, 1, www.business-standard.com)
