Single-Chip MPEG-2 Encoder Developed
VisionTech Ltd. and Digital Media Labs Co. have developed a single-chip MPEG-2 encoder, which is the first step toward getting the technology into the consumer PC market. Developed using a 0.5 micron process and five-layer CMOS technology, the MP@ML encodes D1 images in real time and data at 24 Mbps. Company officials said the product has been tested by major PC and consumer electronics makers in the United States and Japan but would not indicate when volume shipments to OEM customers will be available or how much they will cost.
