I think CB is dead on correct.. The Dems have an issue here and Bush pretty not let them get leverage on him over this Saudi crap...

But it will require them taking Christopher Hitchen's lead and becoming even more hawkish than Bush on the issue of Saudi intransigence and their attempts to spread Wahhabism throughout the muslim world.

And Gore certainly isn't the man to make such a change... If anything, it will be Kerry...

And they should do it in a much more analytical manner... not on the basis of a crusade, or mere "war on terror"...

Because it's the demographics and economics that calling the shots right now... Hundreds of millions of young muslims without prospects for decent economic lives, living in corrupt systems that have been directly, or indirectly, propped up by the west.. (of course, it was the West that created the economic prosperity they already have).

I can deal with authoritarian leaders in the middle east, so long as economic and social progress is made. But I can see any reason to continue tolerating a Wahhabist militant sect of Islam continuing to dictate the "tone" for the muslim world.

Thus, until someone can convince me otherwise, I tend to lean towards a restoration of the Caliphate and Hashemite rule in the Hijaz and Iraq.

Or at least setting these two rivals against one another..
