I have a nephew going to Columbia University to be a dental surgeon at a cost of $300 - 500k. I suspect its mostly on grants and student loans. I spoke with a friend recently who just finished pre-med and plans to go to medical school at a cost of $300k which he said will ALL Be on student loans.

When you look at the jobs picture I can see why they are doing what they are doing. Its kinda like choosing the better of evils or like poker game, when you feel the odds are in your favor and you go ALL IN. If you win great. if you lose, you still go on.
