I’ve a suggestion for anyone using the Erase program we discussed a few days ago.

Run Windows ScanDisk or DOS ChkDsk before running Erase when you wish to clear unused disk space.

If the disk has orphaned data, Eraser will execute normally, and not give any indication of disk problems.

So far, I haven’t found any evidence that running Erase to clear a disk with orphaned data has caused any disk damage. Erase doesn’t seem to overwrite the orphaned data. If the main motivation for using Erase is to shield data from prying eyes, leaving chunks of data untouched may undermine this endeavour.

This concern doesn’t seem to apply to those using Erase to overwrite unwanted files.

The paranoid may wish to run ScanDisk first, Erase the resulting .CHK files next, then finally Erase the unused disk space.

The super-paranoid may as well not bother, because they are going to get you anyway.
