Philips said only that the goal is a $25 encoder. It did not say when the chip would be $25. The most telling part of the article is that author said that the quality of the Sony encoding is not as good as CUBE's, and that the quality of the Philips encoding is not as good as Sony.

There is no doubt that CUBE still leads the way by a considerable margin. Five years ago, who besides AB and crew would have guessed that companies like Sony, IBM, Lucent and Philips would be scrambling to keep up in the digital video market with little CUBE?
