Gore's job is to fire up leftwingers to keep them from voting for Nader. MoveON.org, Dean and Kennedy as well. They can keep the liberals happy while Kerry and his moderate running mate court moderates and moderate-conservatives, including McCain Republicans.

The liberal wing of the Dem party is very united and fired up. Kerry needs them to win, and not go to Nader, but he also is not going to kowtown to them the way Bush kowtows to the extreme rightwing.

Cheney is the main one for Bush who plays to the extreme rightwing. In that sense, Gore and Dean are equalling out Cheney. Same deal.
