Defrag is really useless... Go spend a few dollars, buy norton system works, and run speedisk.
Place a disk cache on your HD about 1 gig or so, and then let it optimize it. By using Defrag, all you do is leave holes in the sectors that quickly get filled when other files are open and closed.. By setting the parameters on speedisk correctly you can actually move less access, or even force mp3 file {per say} to the end of the HD search platter. it alone is not the greatest solution, but unless you know how many platters your HD has, and where you want all the information to be, it's a lot better then Defrag.

Try defraggin 3 160 gig hd {and 2 40gig hd) weekly... it takes 6 hours for one 160 gig.
Speedisk takes 45 minutes to do the 1, and since the others have less accessed and used data on them, it takes them only a few seconds. Furthermore, if you are win 98, or XP you may like the added features that Norton has to offer, like correcting those lame errors from Office XP installs that occur {finding solutions}.

And if you really can't afford Norton systemworks.... might I suggest www.limeware.come
