COLUMBIA, S.C. - Just days after a phony legislative memo urged female pages to dress provocatively, the heads of South Carolina's two major political parties told teen-age boys about their positions on "beer and girls."
Democrat Dick Harpootlian and Republican Henry McMaster made their comments at the annual Boys State leadership event for about 800 high school seniors June 11, The State in Columbia reported yesterday, quoting the Boys State newspaper, The Citizen Times.
Harpootlian noted that qualified high school graduates could get $4,500 for college from the state lottery. "That can buy a lot of beer and girls," he said.
"Democrats are for beer and girls," McMaster responded. "Republicans are for cold beer and hot girls."
"In hindsight, I think Dick and I both got a little carried away," McMaster said. "But the stated purpose was to say, 'Let's forget about all this [beer and girls] and get serious.'"
Republican state Rep. Edith M. "Edie" Rodgers, who heads the House Women's Caucus, said she was disappointed by Harpootlian and McMaster.
"I'm sort of up to here with flippant comments from men at this point," Rodgers said.
Harpootlian said that "anyone that's perturbed at this, I'd say 'Get a life.'"
On June 6, a memo from a fictitious "Men's Caucus" - responding to a real memo from the House Women's Caucus reminding pages about professional work attire - circulated among legislators, saying women pages could get bonuses for wearing tops with less material.
