I can guarantee you'll be amazed at the depth of his knowledge.

I can guarantee you'll be amazed at the lack of depth of my knowledge, but that'll never stop me from contributing my two cents' worth about the looming clash between Cisco, the networking gorilla, and Lucent, the telecom gorilla.

Lucent has the edge in one sense because they've got the relationships with the major telcoms and have the reputation of building out networks that are 99.9% reliable. Cisco has the edge in another sense because they've got the reputation for the IP expertise which is the direction telcoms are being forced to move. John Chambers knows the disadvantage he's got at the start of the battle and has been developing relationships for the past two years hoping to make inroads with the big boys in the international telcom space.

I don't think it's possible to reliably predict who will be the winner. It's possiblie that both companies will do extremely well and that no clear-cut winner will emerge. I'm sticking with Cisco but I think it's a viable strategy to own stocks in both companies.
