Patricia and ToTradeWell,

I just built another Athlon system two weeks ago - 1700XP. That's the sixth Athlon I've built now. They are all just great. I believe they have become the preferred choice for the home builder, or anyone who isn't attached to Intel emotionally. PriceWatch now lists AMD processors first in their CPU menu, a change they made about a year ago.

Price/performance is no contest in AMD's favor. They leap frog each other in claiming best pure performance, but the differences are so small that I believe you can only know by benchmarking. In the real world you'll never see a difference.

I like to to buy cpu's that are just a bit slower than the latest release, at a significant discount to them. Just be sure to go with the DDR platform with a motherboard that uses a fast, stable chipset. You can't go wrong with the VIA kt266A chipset platform. All the boards using it test very close to each other (fast), and some are priced very low. Just make sure the A in kt266a is present. Some vendors have been advertising these and then sending old kt266, a much less robust chipset.

Hope my ramblings help in your decision.

Esteban
