VTEL beams into mainland

STAFF REPORTER
VTEL, a videoconferencing provider, has won a contract from the People's Bank of China to build a nationwide banking-videoconferencing network using satellites.

The project initially will be available in 35 sites through the state financial satellite backbone network and be centred in Beijing, according to technology consultancy, New Century Group.

When finished, the system will be the largest mainland financial videoconferencing network, transmitting at an average speed of 384 kbps, and with a top speed of 2 mbps. It also will be the largest satellite videoconferencing network in Asia.

VTEL won the contract over other foreign videoconferencing vendors. The company built the mainland's videoconferencing backbone network for the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications. It also has built dedicated networks for the ministries of rail, electric power and oil.

More than 800 sites and more than 100 multimedia videoconferencing units have been installed, representing about 70 per cent of China's market.

The contract with the People's Bank of China is VTEL's first in the financial industry. It will provide the bank with a system capable of transmitting picture quality of 30 frames per second.
