I could argue against your Europe was a buffer to protect the USA theory for a long time with constant new points.

Feel free. I won't argue back. I already see that my buffer imagery had too specific a geographic connotation so it conveyed something other than the point I was making and distracted from it. Nadine expressed it better when she spoke of "sphere of influence." I stand by my statement, though, that during the cold war, European and US interests in repelling the Soviets converged perfectly. It was in US interests as well as European interests to hold back the Soviets. I'm assuming you won't argue that point, although I could be mistaken about that.

If you want to argue about something, let's go back and argue the original question that provoked my observation. Do you think that Europe, whatever that means, should defer to the US to define their interests? Do you think that US interests and European interests coincide sufficiently for them to do let us make those determinations for them? And even if they do invariably coincide, do you think that European countries should so abrogate their sovereignty and exercise of their self-determination?
