Philip Morris (MO) 50.00 -0.83: -- Update -- A Los Angeles jury has ordered company to pay $3 bln in punitive damages to 56-yr
old cancer patient, Richard Boeken, who claimed the company failed to sufficiently warn of the health risks of smoking. MO shares are off
1.76 after hours to 48.25.

Chiron (CHIR) 53.01 -2.27: -- Update -- Chiron announces convertible offering (see earlier Short Story). CHIR intends to raise
approximately $400 mln through an offering of 30-year Liquid Yield Option Notes (LYONs). CHIR 50.79 -2.22 from mkt close; see
press release.

Teradyne (TER) 43.21 -0.26: Announces it is selling its Nashua-based Aerospace & Defense connector and backplane business
to Amphenol (APH). Terms were not disclosed. TER said the results from the sale should not be considered additive to its earlier earnings
guidance for Q2; see press release.

Applebee's (APPB) 36.33 -0.57: May comparable store sales for company restaurants increased 2.3%; see press release.

SPS Tech (ST) 49.95 -0.09: Plans to restructure and consolidate certain under-performing operations; company anticipates Q2 earnings
to be in line with the current First Call consensus earnings per share estimate of $0.98 prior to recording losses of the plants to be closed
of approximately $0.05 per share and a non-recurring charge of $0.53 per share; see press release.

Stratos Lightwave (STLW) 12.78 +0.50: Reports Q4 net of breakeven, in line with the First Call consensus of $0.00, vs year-ago
earnings of $0.02; revenues rose 27.9% to $29.94 mln from a year-ago of $23.40 mln. Company expects net sales for Q1 to
be consistent with Q4 sales (vs estimate of $27.96 mln) and expects a sales increase of approximately 20% for FY02. Net income is
expected to be in the range of 8-10% of net sales in FY02; see press release.
