Three Tropes of the Democratic Convention [Jay Nordlinger]
THE CORNER
1. Obama appeals to "the better angels of our nature." Fifty speakers must have said this. By contrast, the shifty, unprincipled, unpatriotic Republicans appeal to people's dark side.

2. Republicans send soldiers off to fight unnecessary wars — to "die for a lie" — and then neglect them when they come home. The Democrats are a friend of veterans. And they view servicemen principally as objects as social welfare — as "children" in need of protection (via Democratic programs).

3. McCain = Bush. He voted with him 90 percent of the time. Alternatively, 95 percent of the time. Or 93.27. (Well, of course McCain has voted with Bush a lot — he's not a right-winger, and neither is Bush. For example, when the president proposes amnesty, or a type of amnesty: McCain says, sure nuff.)

Too Odd [Kathryn Jean Lopez]

Romney is in Dayton today. The McCain campaign asked him to be there; that would be pretty lousy if he's not the veep .

I don't think he's veep (even though he should be).
