Today's IBD notes that short interest is at its highest level since late summer 1999. Careful:

"Short sellers are raising their bets as the market moves against them. In fact, short interest is higher than at any time
during the bear market. You have to go back to August and September 1999 to find higher levels. How did shorts fare then?
Not well. By October, the market kicked off a blistering rally that heaved it to its March 2000 peak."
