DANBURY, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 28, 2001--FuelCell Energy, Inc. FCEL shipped a 250 kW Direct FuelCell(R) (DFC(R)) power plant to the Mercedes-Benz manufacturing facility in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The power plant will tie into the existing power distribution system of the Mercedes plant and provide project participants with operating experience and data. It will also serve as a demonstration of the clean and efficient operation of DFC power plants. Project participants in the commercial field trial include Southern Company, Alabama Municipal Electric Authority, Alabama Power, Mercedes-Benz U.S. International, Inc. and FuelCell Energy.
About Direct FuelCells
Direct FuelCells(R) (DFC(R)) generate electricity with no combustion. They are, in-effect, like large continuously operating batteries that generate electricity as long as fuel, such as natural gas, is supplied. Since the fuel is not burned, there is no pollution commonly associated with the combustion of fossil fuels. Also, the high efficiency leads to more electric power from less fuel and with less carbon dioxide emissions. DFC technology eliminates external fuel processing to extract hydrogen from a hydrocarbon fuel. This results in a product whose cost, combined with high efficiency, simplicity and reliability, results in product advantages for stationary power generation.
