I don't seem him softpedaling the problems. I think he's saying that our presense is exascerbating the problems already in place. Those problems will happen but he is suggesting that if we withdraw, they won't be as extreme.

One big problem is the Kurds. Assuming that the Kurds go for independence, the upheaval will be huge. No sense being caught in the crossfire. Of course, Bush wants to stay there to prevent such a split but the truth is its inevitable. While Muslim, the Kurds are not Arab and their culture is very different from the rest of the Iraqis.......they are more like Armenians. They have taken to freedom like ducks to water and are much further advanced than the rest of Iraq.

The only thing I disagree with what the author is saying is his belief the Iraqi Kurds will not try to unite with the Turkish Kurds. I think he's wrong there.
