Investors Business Daily article: Not a bad article.
Article says, CD-R will cost $500 by year end.
Great!! Duncan, do you really think a $500 dollar product can compete with a $99 or even a $200 zip? (A write once technology that at present writes at 1/3 the speed of the zip). $7.00 a pop and you can only fill up the disk once!! Is someone making a joke here?
Big players betting on CD-R, CD-E and DVD? CDR, I already talked about above. CD-E, they say it MAY be out this year. Zip will ship 5 to 8 million units this year, and approx 25% of all of Micron's computers are shipping with a zip. Other OEMs lined up and more coming: see this weeks Computer Retail Week web site. DVD recordable is coming in 98. This time frame is ages in computer time. Zip acceptance is proceeding much faster than CD-Rom acceptance did, by the time 98 comes around, your kids will be asking, what was a floppy dad?
Joe Gersch, hardly an impartial observer.
>>At the end of the article Iomega is recognized and brushed off as a serious competitor to this technology in the consumer marketplace. << What they do say is that "few media have the cachet of CD's". Whatever that means.
Lastly, according to an earlier IBD article, the first of the LS-120, EZ-135, swan vaporware, or zip to get three of the top ten of the major PC manufacturers as OEM's winis the floppy battle, wins. Zip has done it. LS120 DOA, Syquest in it's last Nasdaq Delisting Gasp, CD-R slow and expensive, and in it's current for, too big to fit in my pocket. Swan vaporware still vapor and too late, too too too late. These competitors are like someone who comes to race at the indy 500 an hour after the race starts, wanting to drive their father's oldsmobile; or in the case of swan, wanting to run around the track without a car; in the case of Syquest they want to race without gas, they don't have money for it. They just don't have a chance, not a cockroaches chance, in a cheap motel room, in the old west, when one of the bad guys is cleaning his six shooter and sees him on the wall. Not even a drunk cowboy could miss.
The stock price will grow slower from here, maybe it will only double in a year.
Ken Long on iomg, and a few August calls just to keep me on my toes.
What do I expect? A nice spike maybe next week with the IBM Aptiva official announcement, and during the NYC show.
