I've never had a drive failure but I understand that it can happen at any time. If you're still under warranty Dell might install a new one for you. The Dell I had had a hardware diagnostics program on a floppy that shipped with the PC. If you didn't get one, you can probably download it from Dell.

You might try booting to safe mode by holding down the Ctrl key when you reboot and choose safe mode from the menu options that are presented. Once you're in safe mode run scandisk and see if it finishes and maybe it will find a bad sector and remove it for you. Let us know of any of this works.
