<<President Bush and General Petraeus owe the country a rigorous and honest assessment of the American training program, starting with what went wrong in BASRA.>>

The battered Sunni forces are currently sitting back watching one group of Shiites killing another group with American assistance. That is what the recent Battle of Basra was all about. The Mahdi Army was swung out in force in Basra, in Baghdad and all over southern Iraq while the other Shiite force, fully trained and equipped by the US, got hammered to a standstill and suffered many desertions, forcing the US Army and Air Force into a rescue act to save it. No sooner were the US Armed Forces in full swing trying to do that than Sadr called off his Mahdi Army. A cease fire was then organized by IRAN - which had called both of the contending Shiite parties to Iran to do so!

The bottom line is that The Mahdi Army is intact and can return to the field of battle whenever Sadr chooses. This army has demonstrated that it can fight the US supported Iraqi government of Quislings to a standstill. Iran has moved itself forward inside Iraq as the sole political force which can get a cease fire in place.
