How bad does the media want the Abu Ghraib story?

Robert Cox at The National Debate

THEN: When the new Mayor of San Francisco began to unilaterally, illegally issue marriage licenses to gay couples the coverage in the major media was 24 x 7 x 7. Gavin Newsome was the toast of the cable new talk shows, Rosie O'Donnell jetted in for a quickie wedding, and live shots from City Hall ran throughout the day as guests speculated breathlessly on whether the Governator would speak out on the issue.

NOW: Massachussets LEGALIZES gay marriage and there is a nary a peep.

We have now passed the three week mark on the Abu Ghraib story which means there has now been more coverage of the Abu Ghraib story then there was of the entire Iraq War.

Syrian WMD experts are killed in a massive train explosion in North Korea, the North Koreans working the crash site approach the cars containing the Syrian remains in Bio-Chem suits but the story is not even discussed on the cable news talk shows.

The leaders of Great Britain and Germany are assaulted in public and it is treated as a humorous anecdote - if mentioned at all.

A WMD Shell is exploded as an IED in Iraq and it is dismissed as "benign" amounts of Sarin gas.

But...we are in week three of the AbuGraibathon and every show is still featuring the Abu Ghraib story or a variation on the theme: Torture, the Geneva conventions, profiles of the Maryland National Guard, and the like.

Chris Matthews today on "Hardball" grilling the attorney for one of the soldiers facing court martial for the Abu Gharib prison scandal:

Matthews: Is your client...a good guy?

Attorney: He is a good guy

Matthews: Thanks...that's a strong statement.<font size=3>
