No, charcoal powered trucks are real enough. My father served in the Occupation of Japan and he said that's what the Japanese truckers drove. He remembered it because it was a point of great amusement with the American troops when they posted speed limit signs of 35 miles an hour and a delegation of truckers came up to say apologetically to the American commander that they couldn't go that fast.

Remember how limited Japan's oil supply was.
