I showed your post to Chris, who is, as you may recall, an expert on sewage treatment and water purification, and he agreed with the guy who installed your septic field.

Bacteria are a component of an activated sludge system, he says, but a septic tank is a long slow process, and there is enough bacteria in the sewage to degrade it.
