Great Wall Electronics International is hoping to expand sales of digital video disc ( DVD ) players and large-screen televisions on the mainland, chairman Kenneth Wong Kwok-wingsaid.

He said production of 38-inch-screen televisions would commence next week and a monthly minimum of 5,000 sets would be made at the firm's mainland plant.

The new product would be aimed mainly at the mainland market and should cost about 12,000 yuan, (about HK$11,148) Mr Wong said.

He said sales growth of televisions with 14- and 21-inch screens would be limited by tough competition.

Mr Wong said circuitry for DVD players should be ready by March and production of them would start a month later.

"The size of the overseas market for DVD players will depend on the level of software utilisation," he said.

The mainland market contributed 29.2 per cent of turnover and 45.7 per cent of operating profit before interest expenses for the year to March 31.
