In Brief: Study Finds Motivated Cable Modem Market (Cable World) Almost two-thirds of all online homes want faster access to the Internet, and about half of those homes are interested in cable modems, according to a new Yankee Group study. However, only about 7% of the 1,900 consumers questioned said that they would pay for faster access. Only 4% of the Internet users surveyed were "very interested" in paying $40 a month for a cable modem. Yankee Group said about one-sixth of all U.S. households have Internet access.
Direct-broadcast-satellite service DirecTV has signed a music deal with Warner Bros. Domestic Pay-TV, Cable & Network Features. The first project is described as a weekly, half-hour music-news series focusing on rock, pop and country; it will begin in February and be produced by Tri-Crown Productions. In addition, Warner Bros. will package two live pay-per-view concerts next year for DirecTV subscribers, with the first scheduled for the summer.
More cable networks have licensed Wink Communications' interactive technology. Newly announced are Turner Broadcasting System Inc.'s CNN, CNN Headline News, TBS Superstation and TNT, Disney's ESPN and ESPN2, and MTV Networks' Nickelodeon/Nick at Nite and VH-1. Embedded within regular programming, Wink's interactive elements can be viewed using standard analog and digital cable set-top boxes. Last month, Wink announced programming and television set manufacturer initiatives with NBC and Toshiba, respectively (MD, 11/26/97). |
