Wireless Infrastructure Revolution to Send Base Station
11/21/0 12:0 (New York)

Semiconductor Market Soaring

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 21, 2000--A rapidly
growing worldwide wireless phone subscriber base coupled with a
migration to third generation (3G) high-speed technology will create a
booming market for wireless transceiver base station (BST)
semiconductors over the next few years.
High-tech market research firm Cahners In-Stat Group
(http://www.instat.com/) forecasts a 25 percent compound annual growth
rate (CAGR) for wireless BSTs from 2000-2004. In-Stat projects
wireless BTS semiconductor revenues will jump from $5.6 billion in
1999 to almost $9 billion in 2004.
Over the next few years, wireless carriers face difficult choices
concerning their future infrastructure investments. In Europe, GPRS is
emerging as the top choice to bridge the gap between GSM and W-CDMA.
"In Asia, networks are just reaching capacity and the move to 3G
is becoming a necessity," says Allen Nogee, a senior analyst for
In-Stat's Wireless Service.
"In the United States, with three different air interfaces,
carriers must decide not only whether to move to 3G, but also which
migration path to take. Despite these uncertainties, the
infrastructure market will continue to grow, boosting BTS
semiconductor demand."

In-Stat also found:

-- The power amplifier segment will account for the largest BST
semiconductor revenue share, with radio front-end, modulation,
demodulation, and signal processing following behind.

-- GSM technology, with 52 percent revenue share in 2000, leads
the market, followed by CDMA (35 percent), TDMA (10 percent)
and PDC (3 percent)

-- In 2004, GSM and CDMA will tie for the revenue market share
lead at 44 percent

The report, The Infrastructure Revolution - Five Year Worldwide
Cellular/PCS BTS Semiconductor Forecast, (No. WT0003IN), includes
forecasts for BTS semiconductors and base stations broken down by
technology and function.
It also features a wireless technology history and overview, an
examination of base station deployment and life cycles, an explanation
of signal processing in the BTS, an overview of semiconductor vendors,
and a look at base station manufacturers.
