Tried your /a trick. No joy.

Tried a re-install of Word. No joy.

Made a new shortcut and double clicked it. No joy.

Double clicked Winword.exe. No joy.

My wife has a Microsoft office toolbar at the top of her screen. There is another bar at the bottom (it contains the start icon, among other things). I noticed that each time I clicked the Toolbar Word icon or tried starting Word from START, I got another small Word icon on the bottom bar until I had 2 or 3 icons, then they would stop accumulating. HOWEVER, each time I clicked the toolbar Word icon or tried to start word from START, I would get a new entry in the task list that you see when you hit control-alt-delete. The only way of getting rid of the icons on the bottom bar was to delete the instances of Microsoft Word-document1, Microsoft Word-document2, and Microsoft Word-document3.

Also, if I click one of the Word icons on the bottom bar, the test "Microsoft Word" flashes in white text in a vertical column three places on the body of the screen.

This is weird. Even re-installing Word didn't work.

Oh, yes, the other MS Office components (Excel, Powerpoint, ...) open and work OK.
