Now I think we're getting somewhere. Sounds like your program is opening new docs minimized. Right-click your icon that you usually use to open Word and choose properties. If the run box has "minimized" in it change it to normal.

Also, if I click one of the Word icons on the bottom bar, the test "Microsoft Word" flashes in white text in a vertical column three places on the body of the screen.

This I don't understand. When you click on these docs they should present the new page. Right-click them and choose maximize and let's see if they work.

Tried a re-install of Word. No joy

If none of the above gets us anywhere did you just do a reinstall or did you uninstall Office and then install it again. If you installed on top of the old Office it apparently didn't fix the problem. Uninstall it through the control panel/ add remove programs applet and then install again.

Just a suggestion. Get rid of the toolbar. Unless you're concerned with the extra second or so that it takes to open word the office toolbar is a resource drag to your system. Right-click your Start button/ choose explore and click on programs. Right-click on any blank area and choose new and then folder. Name it Disabled Startup. Go back to Start/ Program Files/ Startup and left click and drag the office toolbar shortcut to the disabled folder and release it. It's pretty touchy so do it slowly. When you drag it you should see a black line. That should move the toolbar there. If you want it back just drag and drop it back to the startup folder.
