Yahoo's decision to include adult products (including porn) in their shopping section will help them much more than it will hurt. What is the largest industry on the web? What topic is their engine used to search for more than anything else? Sex. To find evidence of this, all you have to do is look in any of their user areas to see what subject generates the greatest volume of posts, categories, etc. The new ad boxes that pepper their site now usually contain subtly alluring images (e.g., a picture of an attractive busty woman smiling is used to promote their domain registration services). If you pour through lists of the most popular search terms and phrases each month, sex has been the consistent leader for years. Yahoo has demonstrated that now they get it - sex sells. Always has, always will, and the internet is certainly not an exception. Will their decision to include adult products in their shopping department cause some users to shun Yahoo? Sure. But it will attract many more than it will repel. Will it necessarily translate into profits? It is debatable, but I think it won't be any more difficult than selling earmuffs at the North Pole.

Now all they need to do is to put someone at the helm who will continue to add to their paid premium services. If performed carefully, this action could quickly convert their world-leading base of free users into a significant source of revenue. The old-style ad boxes are not a waste, but the real money is in recurring subscription-based charges. The online adult industry figured this out long ago, and now that Yahoo has realized that sex sells, can they be far behind?
