for your education-- there are 3 types of investment categories listed on a balance sheet: available-for-sale securities, trading securities, and held-to-maturity securities. Available-for-sale securities are valued at cost. however, if it is determined that there is a permanent decline in investment value, then the investment must be written down. got it??
