You are missing my point, which is that any privacy-friendly legislation favors Digital Me over another Internet construct that doesn't inherently safeguard the user's identity. I was not suggesting that legislation be tailored to the specifics of Digital Me.

It certainly would be possible, under such legislation, for a company to compete with Digital Me -- but to be competitive, it would also have to be protective of the privacy of users. Otherwise, it would be at grave risk (or put other actors at risk) of running afoul of the privacy rules. Just setting up pro-privacy ground rules promotes a Digital Me-type Internet universe over the type we have right now.

Therefore, I'd argue that this kind of law favors both Novell's approach and the interests of consumers.
