Halliburton surges on share buyback, guilty plea

Shares of Halliburton Co. /quotes/zigman/228631 /quotes/nls/hal HAL +3.73% rose nearly 4% in early trading Friday after news it pleaded guilty to destroying evidence in the Gulf of Mexico’s Deepwater Horizon disaster, and the oilfield services company readied a $3.3 billion share buyback.

Halliburton will pay $200,000 for the misdemeanor related to the 2010 blowout, which killed 11 workers and triggered the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history.
