It may be that when you play a DVD the software resets your resolution to 640x480 and doesn't reset it. Try setting your resolution to higher values, then clicking "apply", and see what happens. I've got an LCD monitor that I occassionally have to unplug and reconnect from it's power supply to straighten it out when it gets weird, only the display breaks up into disconnected quarter-screens! Try that, just unplug it from it's power brick, wait a couple of seconds, and then re-plug it in and turn it back on.
