Hello!

I first posted an opinion about the actual article some time last week (http://www.techweb.com/se/directlink.cgi?INW19990419S0001). By the way, this piece is much shorter than the written version. I'm working on locating that :)

NDSv8 (the next version of NDS) does LDAPv3 natively whereby the current version does not. Both Cisco and Ford Motor Corp (who followed suit) claim that Active Directory is nowhere to be found and that they could not wait for NDSv8.

Their argument was one of convenience. Netscape Directory Server was the only shipping product that completely and natively handles LDAPv3. NDSv8 is due out sometime June/July so in essence with the speed of the interent in mind, that's a lot of money to wait for NDSv8.

Otherwise, NDS is the more robust directory when you look at Netscape's directory scalability and functionality. Also if you read the original piece, it's much more anti-MS than anti-Novell. The key issue here is that 2 major companies heavy into IT (Cisco is obvious and Ford is a complete MS shop) who are making a HUGE case for directories.

I see this as GOOD no matter which product they choose to use because it will force MANY companies to seriously look at NDS. Once they do, I feel confident they will choose NDS for their network needs.

Also anyone who has NDS will not dump it for anything. Those who don't will check it out, test drive it. I don't see companies just buying up Netscape Directory server on the sole basis Cisco did....then again, I've seen crazier things :)
