Because the CT scan can accurately gauge the extent of heart disease, it should be helpful in determining whether patients have disease that is advanced enough to warrant taking medications, Guerci said.

"This should be helpful for people whose doctors say, 'Your cholesterol is a little high,' or 'Your blood pressure is a little high,''' he explained.

"The really attractive feature of this test is its potential as a screening test for the early detection of coronary disease in people who have no symptoms,''
