Samsung Electronics Sells 10 Million Chip Sets
December 19, 1997 (SEOUL) -- Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. posted sales of 10 million CD-player chip sets as of this month since it started commercial production in 1990, the company said Dec. 17.
Nonmemory CDP chip sets are used in video CD players and other components, with global demand totalling 40 million units a year. Samsung said it expects to record 47 billion won ($31.8 million) in chip set sales this year.
Samsung, the world's largest memory chip maker, has intensified its nonmemory sector since the 1990s, and currently ranks tenth among "Mycom" chip makers, representing 3.9 percent of the world's total output.
A "Mycom" chip, which can be programmed to perform multiple tasks, is used for various electronic devices, including TV sets and video game machines. Samsung posted 200 billion won in "Mycom" chip sales so far this year.
Samsung said it plans to develop a new nonmemory chip, called "Super One," by combining several chips into one during the first quarter of next year.
