Samsung Electronics Sells 10 Million Chip Sets

December 19, 1997 (SEOUL) -- Samsung Electronics Co.,
Ltd. posted sales of 10 million CD-player chip sets as of this
month since it started commercial production in 1990, the company
said Dec. 17.

Nonmemory CDP chip sets are used in video CD players and other
components, with global demand totalling 40 million units a year.
Samsung said it expects to record 47 billion won ($31.8 million) in chip
set sales this year.

Samsung, the world's largest memory chip maker, has intensified its
nonmemory sector since the 1990s, and currently ranks tenth among
"Mycom" chip makers, representing 3.9 percent of the world's total
output.

A "Mycom" chip, which can be programmed to perform multiple tasks,
is used for various electronic devices, including TV sets and video game
machines. Samsung posted 200 billion won in "Mycom" chip sales so
far this year.

Samsung said it plans to develop a new nonmemory chip, called "Super
One," by combining several chips into one during the first quarter of
next year.
