The church was pretty brutal in those days e.g. torture for heresy. witches burned at the stake.

And the church had a catch 22 i.e. if you confessed you died but were saved in heaven, if you didn't confess you were innocent, but died and received your reward in heaven, plus they didn't mess with your family.
