Audio-video publishers to prioritize technology
MANUFACTURERS of audio-video products across the country are being called on to prioritize science and technology subjects and map out publishing plans in accordance with the needs of the public.
Yu Yongzhan, deputy administrator of the State Press and Publication Administration (SPPA), asked publishers concerned to market more high-quality audio-video products in the next several years.
Such products will help disseminate scientific knowledge and teach the masses practical new technology.
According to Yu, the administration has adopted a five-year (1996-2000) programme for publishing audio-video products, with a total of 476 titles included as key subjects.
Some 200 publishers, or more than 49 per cent of the total producers of audio-video materials nationwide, will take part in implementing the national programme.
Among these titles, 156 are about arts and culture, 141 about education and 116 about modern science and technology.
Yu stressed that modern techniques should be used in making such products.
He said that the SPPA and the Chinese Association for Science and Technology (Cast) will organize professional training sessions to help producers select good subjects and improve production skills.
"Measures will also be taken to expand circulation of audio-video products with science and technology subjects," Yu said.
To boost publishing of audio-video products on science and technology and enhance product quality, the SPPA and Cast granted awards to 60 good titles yesterday in Beijing.
Selected from a total of 162 programmes, many of the award-winning titles reflect new technologies in farming and medicine. Some are about nature and others about people who have made great contributions to scientific developments in their respective professions.
With three awards netted, the Chinese Studio for Agriculture Movie and Television Programmes became the champion among the more than 50 award winners from throughout the country.
Since its initiation in 1989, more than 300 programmes have gained this honour, the highest awarded by China in the audio-video publishing field.
