Nigeria Pipeline Explosion Kills 16

(RTTNews) - A pipeline carrying petroleum products exploded Tuesday in Nigeria's biggest commercial city of Lagos, killing at least 16 and injuring scores, the Red Cross said.

The blast in the Abule Egba area shook the densely populated neighborhood after dawn as hundreds of people were scooping fuel from a pipeline punctured by thieves, Nigerian Red Cross spokesman Umar Mairiga said. He said several people were injured in the "quite large" explosion.

Nigerians often break pipelines carrying refined fuel, scooping up the raw product in buckets or plastic bags. Spilled fuel sometimes catches fire engulfing people nearby.

In May, more than 150 people died in a similar explosion in Lagos.
