It has been shown that the ammount of HIV RNA found in blood is directly related to the HIV found in Lymphoid tissue. Therefore the only way we will be able to say whether or not there is no replication is when we have a test down to "0" copies. The number of copies under the level of detection is very important, because when a patient is under treatment that should tell you the resistance. Treatment will stop replication of wild virus, but if there is mutant (resistant) virus that will replicate, maybe the level of replication will be low, but if there is any mutant being replicated, that will only increase over time. Blood from the patients of the study you quoted was given to Dr. Richman, San Diego. And he found that CD45RO(memory) cells present in that blood contained replication-competent integrated provirus, which could be activated to yield infectious virus even after 2 years of "undetectable" HIV RNA. Remember "HAART" now, "FAART" in the future. Interesting. Regards, JLL
