I think that's true. DEC users probably don't value the Win95 UI, and the other CPU vendors don't have a product that can compete with Intel. Over the long term, though, other vendors will produce CPUs for the desktop at lower prices. Intel must produce the best CPUs, rather than relying on Microsoft to develop SW for Intel exclusively (the "Wintel" monopoly is a myth).

Motorola bought a company in Menlo Park a couple of days ago to address the PowerPC NT server market. They'll be competing with Apple, who was once their best customer. It looks like they're preparing for the day when Apple is no longer with us. They were loyal for too long.
