Mary Beth, go ahead and call them... whatz the most they'll say: we "can't" say? I spoke to Seagate IR back in Dec. and they were really helpful. I had asked them if they thought KM, if signed by drive makers other than Seagate, would be a threat to Seagate. Of course, their being an MR-type house, they said no. In getting the answer for me, though, IR went off and seemed to really look into the question before responding. I thought this was commendable. You likewise may be surprised. Playing the sleuth may also work with others as well (guess I just blew the cover...). How about WDC, for instance? They never returned my calls before. Or, how about the new optical, or magneto-optical players (so to speak) such as Syquest, and those involved in technologies that could potentially put a big dent in magnetic-type disc drives down the road a ways. One that comes to mind is Terastor (http://www.terastor.com . Hype or not, I'm sure they've raised more than one eyebrow. These latter guys have me worried, even though Syquest has problems getting things out on time and their stk is about $2.5 or so. There latest drive looks really good though.
I may make a few calls myself once I get off a short upcoming business trip. Meanwhile, go for it.
Best regards,
