Great comments, but consider the following:

A well-meaning Republican/Democratic president won't make the government "good", not matter how hard he or she tries. The faults are within the system itself, or at least within the system they have created.

When the federal government is allowed to assume powers outside those granted in the Constitution, it can't be restrained. There's no set of rules that it has to operate within and respect. And it also means that (by the 10th Amendment) it took these powers away from the states or the people.

We have gotten addicted to largesse, to "free money," to an ever more munificent and yet more brutal state. Yet somehow we don't see the correlation between munificence and brutality. We think that a good person at the helm will make the system good.

This is wishful thinking, and has never been borne out by history.

I take some comfort in the fact that the transition of Roman society from freedom to despotism took 200 years or so (we're about 85 years in). And even then, most people didn't notice or care.
