Where do you stand on economic policies that maximize the utility of the stronger property owners and maintain their purchasing power, vs economic policies that maximize utility for all individuals as a whole? Does it always have to be a trade off?

I don't think that particular conflict is nearly as common as many people imagine.

What you mean by "maximize the utility of..."?

Subsides to the rich are usually bad all the way around. They don't serve the cause of freedom, they don't serve the cause of equality, and they don't serve the cause of economic efficiency. Getting rid of them typically serves all three causes.

OTOH allowing the rich to keep and use their own property also usually serves at least the cause of freedom and the cause of economic efficiency, or to put it another way it "maximizes the utility of the stronger property owners" their ability to "maintain their purchasing power" and it maximizes "utility for all individuals as a whole".

Which isn't to say that you couldn't have a situation where specific property rights where in conflict with utility maximization, where they where worked against both equality and economic efficiency. If you want an answer as to how I'd respond in such a situation, I'd have to know the specifics of the situation.
