I think the register article is wrong. The rest of your supposition is correct - my understanding is that these systems are incompatible below the application layer... that is reason enough for Intel to just hold the McKinley schedule.

I am not involved with any McKinley or Merced development so my information is anecdotal, but comes from people who ARE involved. My current best guess based on the tidbits I have gathered is that Merced products will hit the market later this year, maybe September or October, and McKinley will be about 18 months after that.

Also, Merced machines may perform better than early results would indicate. That may be another reason for those systems to be pushed as more than development platforms.

I think the Register is way off the mark on this one but who knows??? Some of the Intel gurus like Paul Engle could probably give better information.
