It all goes back to "truthiness". There are "true facts", which are true in and of themselves, and then there are "truthiness facts" which possess the quality of "truthiness" because you feel that it should have happened that way because they fit with your ideology or are more convenient.

This actually has been studied in depth. Read George Orwell's 1984. Particularly the role of the Ministry of Truth, which out hero Winston Smith works in.
