Thanks. I agree with you that we could split the hair either way.

Tibet was historically an independent country and the communists were expanding and consolodating power much like imperial Japan but America and the rest of the free world was preoccupied with the Soviets. China is not going to willingly release their hold on any land. After all they are still whining about wanting to control Taiwan.

The free world may yet choose to register their displeasure with China by making the Olympic opening ceremonies a all client state affair. Even while the people of the country may not notice the leadership will be quite upset over it. Will they act in their own short term interests or the best interests of future Chinese and Tibetans.
